them for a small slice of bread, they answered
that he could ask me for it. The poor lad starved,
he got scabies and ringworm and eventually
everybody started to shun him. And so, as in
every other tale of mine, I took pity on him.
Moreover, I also wanted to show him that a cat is
worth more than you would think when her
master loves her and has confidence in her.
I began to hunt and offered my preys to the
king, telling him that those presents were sent by
my master, a noble lord. Since his majesty often
invited me for lunch, I ate profusely, and grabbed
delicious morsels to bring back to the poor lad. I
was so nimble that nobody ever realized.
After some time the king said that he desired to
meet my master. And so I did something
extraordinary: thanks to me Fortunato had
