À Madame la marquise de L***

                          There is people whose spirit is stilted,
                          Under a never cheered forehead,
                          They do not suffer, neither approve nor value
                          Anything but pompous and sublime;
                          For me, I would actually point out
                          That sometimes the highest spirit
                          May love even Puppets without blushing up;
                          And that there are times and places
                          Where the grave and serious
                          Are not worth more than a nice nonsense.
                          Why should we fill with wonder
                          If the most sensible Reason,
                          Often tired by an excessive vigil,
                          Take pleasure to slumber
                          Ingeniously cradled
                          By stories of ogres and fairies?
                          Without being afraid of someone who might
                          Condemn me for wasting my leisure,
                          I am going, to satisfy your right desire,
                          To tell you all the story of Donkey Skin.
