And so the nanny immediately thought to herself:
- If I can buy this old hag’s skin, we’re saved!
So the two women went into the church, and
after the ceremony had ended, the nanny found
the undertaker. She asked him if he would sell her
the skin of that dead old woman. At first, the
undertaker refused, but after the nanny had
offered him twenty gold coins, he finally agreed.
He took out his knife, and peeled the old
woman’s skin off nice and proper. Once she’d
received the old hag’s hide, including her face,
her white hair, her hands – with the fingernails
still on! – and all the rest, the nanny had it cured
and sewn onto a sheet of linen. She then gave it
to the young girl, to wear as a disguise. And there
was indeed no way of telling who the girl was.
