was in despair and did not know what to do. She
grabbed the broom and killed them all, save one
who hid in the keyhole of the kitchen door. As
soon as she had finished to kill all the chickpea-
children, the woman started mourning: "Dear
me! It was all to no avail, now I am again without
children". The little boy heard her and said:
"Mummy, if you do not kill me, I will come out
to be your son." When Little Chickpea - she gave
him this name - came out of the keyhole, his
mother gave him bread and cheese and sent him
to his father who was working faraway.
Along the way Little Chickpea came across a
ditch and could not leap over it. He called a man
and said to him: "Help me, and I will give you
bread and cheese". The man helped him, but
Little Chickpea ran away without giving him
