maiden turned sixteen, her mother died. In her
grief, Catarina locked herself in her room and
refused to come out. She decided to eat and to
sleep in her room and gave up taking walks, going
to the theater, or having any other diversions. Her
father was very unhappy that his only daughter
kept herself from having any pleasure in life. So
he decided to summon a council. He called
together all the leading men of the city. Indeed, as
a merchant, he naturally knew all the best people.
- Gentlemen, you know very well that I have a
daughter who is the light of my eyes. But ever
since her mother died, she keeps herself shut in
like a cat and won’t even stick her nose out the door.
